{Family Fun} Piper’s Teething Tip

Teething.

It pretty much bites (sorry, had to do it!)

Luckily we’ve never had it REALLY bad.  At least with Addie and Hayden, Hyland Teething Tablets were out and worked WONDERS! Seriously, the kids would instantly stop crying.  But then a recall happened around the time Piper started teething.

Fabulous.

(Both in that the others had been using it, and also in that I could no longer use it. We lost in all directions.)

But what it did was make me search for new things that would comfort Miss Piper, as she also seemed to get hit harder in the teething department than her “older” sisters.

Popsicles are a HUGE success!  She’s munching a slow-melt mighty mini pop in these photos. I really like these as a treat for the kids because they are tiny and they melt VERY slowly. Just right for the Littles. But you could also make your own out of just about anything if you’re worried about sugar, etc. (use an ice cube tray, Dixie cup, anything small).  My kids have never really been fans of teething rings and toys, but frozen treats really do the trick!

Other frozen fun that’s good for teething? Frozen banana slices. It’s something nutritious, and helps with those sore gums. Just keep a Ziplock of frozen slices ready to go in the freezer.

Another one? Green smoothies (or any smoothie for that matter) if it’s cold and coming through a straw, Piper is one happy camper! And again, healthy!

A non cold treat? Corn on the cobb. Now I’m not sure if there is a choking hazard with this one, but I do know that all 3 girls GO TO TOWN when corn on the cobb is served with dinner. I cut them in half or thirds for their little hands and they chow down like a dog with a bone.  It actually doesn’t even matter if corn kernals are there are not!  Again, nutritious and helps their painful gums.

But in the end, it’s the popsicle that melts my heart!  Those little frozen rosie cheeks…

Chubby little fingers getting the last of the pop…

Working so hard to enjoy that little frozen sweet nothing…

Cute little baby lips!!

Yep, frozen pops definitely help an aching mouth, but they also make a mama smile!

Tip: Don’t be afraid to think outside the box for teething tricks. Would love to know what works for you in your house??

(Disclosure: Slow-melt Pops doesn’t know me, but my freezer is stocked with them! Couldn’t help but share.)

Love all the healthy simple tips!
My go to solutions was the little mesh bags with the handle… filled with an ice cube! Kids loved it.

We do this as well, but I put a frozen peach in the mesh bag and it works well.

That’s a great tip too, and not to messy to clean up! Thanks!

We live on mini melts too..freezer is stocked and I will travel near and far to get them! I have 4 kids – my youngest is 18 months (my oldest is 7). Unfortunately for awhile my 18 month old ate crayons..paper and all. I know..bad mom, but after a few nibbles, she’d be happy. Needless to say, her diaper was always an interesting color – pediatrician wasn’t thrilled, but they were organic crayons, so I had that on my side! Back to your question..my biggest secret teething trick..puppy chew toys. Yup! Puppies teeth too and the puppy teethers are far less expensive and they are very durable!! Head to your local pet store and pick up a few rubber puppy teethers..such a steal! My youngest LOVED them. :)

We also use the Sassy Teething Feeder (it’s about $7 at Babies R Us). It’s a ring attached to a mesh bag. Supposedly a dad invented this after his child almost choked, so it works great for babies and toddlers. I buy a bag of the frozen mango cubes from the freezer section of Trader Joe’s, put one or two in the mesh bag, run some cold water over it to give it some moisture, and hand to my 7-month old. She loves, loves, loves it! Sometimes I bite into the mango chunks once in the bag to help break them up for her. This gives her a good 15 minutes of teething comfort. She is getting her 6th tooth right now (very early teether) so this is my go-to tip!

I used to use a bag similar to that but always hated washing it after. Do you have a good tip to for cleaning?? Love the tip, especially wetting the frozen fruit a bit! Thanks!

When my now 30-year-old children were babies and before their first teeth came in, my mother used to give them full-size carrots to teeth on. Since they came straight out of the refrigerator, they were cold. They were sweet, they were healthy, and they were not nearly as messy as teething cookies.

I love that!! Every time I take my 3 yo to the grocery store she runs to the produce section and grabs a huge carrot! I always grab another to use at the check out so she can eat it while we shop :-) Great tip!
