{family fun} DIY Watercolor Paint with Baking Soda

So before we left on our big trip….you know that one month away with the kids in the middle of no where?

Yep, that “little” trip.

Before we left, I gathered lots of craft supplies to pack for the Little Punks.  But as you know, that’s not cheap….especially when you’re gathering supplies for a whole month, AND you have 3 Little Punks that will want to join in on the fun. So then I really started tapping into resources and favorite blogs to find some more inexpensive ideas.

And as usual, La Jolla Mom did not disappoint!  Did you know you could make kids watercolor paint with Baking Soda??  Honestly, is there anything you CAN’T do with Baking Soda??  Talk about a multi-tasker.

La Jolla Mom originally found the paint recipe HERE, where you can find a helpful video too.  I LOVE this tip!  We go through so.much.paint in this house, that I love the idea of making our own and saving a little cashola.

Tools and Materials:

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Light corn syrup
  • Cornstarch
  • Food Coloring

Watercolor Paint How-To:
1. In a mixing bowl, mix 4 tablespoons baking soda with 2 tablespoons vinegar until fizzing stops. Add 1/2 teaspoon corn syrup and 2 tablespoons cornstarch. Mix until a uniform consistency.

2. Pour the mixture into individual egg carton cups (or a muffin tin), filling each about a third to halfway.

3. Add five to 10 drops of food coloring to each cup, mixing in thoroughly, to reach desired colors.

4. Allow paints to set overnight. Use paints on watercolor paper with a wet paintbrush.

With school starting for most families this week, file this in the back of your brain for a fun weekend project or after school activity….the possibilities are endless!
