{Home & Garden} Addie’s & Hay’s Room and Toddler Bunk Bed

So you saw Piper’s Room (though a week after showing you, I got the itch to rearrange…there will be another post soon…).  This is Addie & Hay’s room.  I wish I had taken photos when it was just Addie’s Nursery. Actually, I’m sure I did, it’s just they would have been taken prior to my writing this blog, therefore WHO KNOWS where they are….

The thing to know is that the furniture is the same. I’m big on rearranging and reusing everything and anything. I like to buy once and use it an infinite amount of times.

The table (orginaly purchased for my college kitchen table) was the changing table for Addie’s nursery (after I had it cut down to a narrow depth).  The skirt hides large plastic toys that I can’t bear to see daily. The pillows were all made for the queen bed that used to be in the nursery.  We had the new twin bed made for Addie by a dear friend.  I used existing Pottery Barn storage baskets to slide under the bed with toys.

There are a pair of bookcases that we found at a second hand store. The rug is from Ikea. Super cozy and soft.

The photos were all taken by Sandy Heit. They are from Addie’s 2 week photo shoot. Her crib used to sit directly below them, so they are a bit off center for the current setup….and um, kinda need to be updated now that it’s both Hay’s and Addie’s room.

This is a small little room, 10′ x 10′ so it’s definitely always had to be a perfect puzzle to make it all fit. Not that many inches to spare.

This is Hay’s side of the room.  The crib used to be Addie’s, but when Piper was born, Hayden became the new resident when she moved in with Addie. The stuffed animal collection is not my favorite, but it is the girls’ and each has a special meaning to them. The tissue poufs were leftover from their birthday party….we went for extra mileaege weeks with them!

Hayden is 2 years & 3 months.  She has been able to climb out of her crib for about 5 months. But she never really does, only if she really, really, really wants out and doesn’t want to wait (until after you’ve gone to the bathroom.) Then a few weeks ago, while Hay and Addie were playing “baby” in her crib, THIS happens.  Guessing she was trying to tell us she’s not a baby anymore.

So I did a bunch of research on beds. My problem was 2 twin beds would swallow the room. But my little girls are 2 and 3 years old!!  HOW could I put them in full bunk beds?? Then I found this toddler size bunk bed at Ikea. And it occurred to me I could paint it black. It was perfect.

So I bought it.

My mom and I partially assembled it. My husband handed me his electric sander, and then I painted it.

It took me about a week of 20 minute windows. But it wasn’t too hard. I used a Behr paint and primer combo to try and minimize steps. Then Hay helped us carry it all into their room.

We dismantled their old room.

And we put the puzzle together.

And now they have a bunk bed (please don’t look too closely at my paint job….we had a bit of a rain storm while it was out on the driveway…I kinda have a few touch ups.)

I’ve reused all the same pillows again. The bedding on the top was Addie’s twin bedding. And the comforter on the bottom is from Addie’s nursery queen bed.

Now both bookcases flank the window again as they did when it was Addie’s nursery.

And here’s their little bunk bed.

The room actually has sooo much more play space now.  We all pile on their rug and read books and watch them play dress up.

Hay (our 2 year old) sleeps in the top bunk.  She is good at climbing the ladder which is not tall at all.  The sides are perfect since she still moves around quite a bit when she’s sleeping and I think it reminds her just enough of her crib, but also let’s her feel like a big girl. Addie (our 3 year old) sleeps on the bottom bunk (basically the mattress is on the floor). She is awesome about getting up in the middle of the night to go potty when she needs to, but she is normally half asleep….love that there is no fear of hurting herself.

I think it’s working for Hayden.

And Addie is pretty cozy too!

We have a similar be for our 3 year old but instead of putting the extra mattress on the floor the bottom section was tented and turned into a fort for the kids to play (and to hide the toys). I love the height of the bed. I cam still reach in for snuggles and kisses. Oh andthere is a little removable slide off one end so he can slide out in the morning. The greatest!

I love that! And I love the fort idea. I actually have plans to install curtains for them too on the ceiling…its on the “project list” :-)

Soooooo cute! My sister and I slept in the same room in bunk beds for years and I still remember the day it was delivered because we were SO excited to be roommates. I have really lovely memories growing up being able to “bunk” in the same room as my sis. These are perfect because they are not huge! When my little one gets older we might consider these to open up some more space. Awesome post. Your house looks great!

So cute!! Quick question- your window shades….do they block out sunlight?

Yes, all of the kids rooms have black out shade material sewn into them! Whether it’s true or not, I credit that to them sleeping well :-) Thanks!

That is such a smart idea to put the skirt around that table to hide the toys. How did you do it? Thanks for sharing!

I should probably take photos, it would be easier to explain, but I screwed in 2 small hooks on either end of the table, then out a small wooden rod through each of the curtains and added very small D-rings to the either side of the rods. Then yo just hang the rings on the hooks. The hooks sit pretty high up under the table so the kids can’t get hurt on them, and it’s easy to remove the skirts to clean. HOWEVER, I’ve also seen something similar by using velcro tape sew to the curtain and taped to the table/or to skirt a sink. Does that make sense?? Super simple and great affect!

    Hi,
Love it – the bed is just what I have been looking for, to put in my two little boys room – I would love to paint it too, all white – but I am a total painting novice, any hints or tips? What sort of paint should I use?
    Thanks

Debating with my husband about getting these for our 4 yr old. Has anyone tried to jump off the top yet?
Also what mattress did you get for the top? Is that just a standard twin mattress on the bottom? Love it! I think we will paint ours white, then cover the side panels with some cute hot pink patterned fabric. :)

No one has tried to jump off the top. Our 2 year old (2yrs & 4 mos) is the one that sleeps there and she barley even uses the ladder. Only when she REALLY wants to get up or down and doesn’t feel like waiting for someone. We have a rule of no standing or jumping on the top bunk and no one has tried. We did use a regular twin mattress that we already had from Addie’s big girl bed for the mattress on the floor for her, then purchased the Ikea low profile mattress for the top ($99). If I had not already had Addie’s twin, then I would probably have purchased both girls the low profile mattress. it’s very comfortable! The only issue I have with the way the bunks are set up now is the regular size twin mattress is a little tall for the lower bunk and Addie who is only 3yrs & 3 mos, but tall, has bumped her head getting in a couple of times, as have I…..so if you don’t already have a mattress, WORTH it to get the Ikea ones. If you do have one, no biggie :-)

Also, I think the fabric panels would be cute!!! I bought fabric the same day as my original plan had been to paint it white and then cover the panels in fabric….but my heart always ends back at black! Would love to see photos if you do it :-) Good luck!

I love that you used the Ikea bed. I’ve been wondering what on earth I’m going to do with my twin girls’ tiny bedroom when they outgrow their cribs. Buying toddler beds seems like a waste of money, and I loved that bed from Ikea before I even had kids. I’m glad to see the mattress on the floor works well.

Purchased the bed yesterday. Ikea rep was worried about putting a mattress on the floor? Any troubles with air circulation for bottom mattress?

I am considering getting this bed for my 2 year old so was so happy to see your post. I had a question tho, you said you have your 2 year old on the top for the sides which I really like but what about when she wakes up at night? My son currently still wakes up occasionally and when he does usually comes to our room if I haven’t heard him yet, I am concerned about him climbing down the ladder in the middle of the night. He’s a really good climber I just don’t know about in a sleepy state. Have you experienced this yet? My other thought was to try and put a guard around the bottom- because like you said he too still moves around a lot at night, has anyone found somethings that works? thanks!

Both of our younger daughters have slept on the top bunk from 2 on. My now 4 year old (who started in this bed at 2 years, 3 mos), never really got out of bed that much. I used to think it was because the thought of climbing down the ladder actually discouraged her from coming to our room at night. But when my youngest daughter (now 3) was moved into it at 2-1/2 nothing deterred her!! She has climbed down the ladder in the dead of night, as well as down the other side of the bed without the ladder. It has horizontal slats that she climbs down. The bed is really not that high. But if your son is a good climber I think he will be fine! Piper would climb out at 2-1/2 to go potty and get back in on her own. (though my 4 year old didn’t like getting up to go potty from the top bunk and asked to move. Each child is different.) He could be like my middle daughter who just opted to call to us to come get her (not fun either)!! I honestly love the bed and am still planning on using in the new house, possibly painted out gold or silver :-) Hope this helps!!

Hi Jessica! We love the bed!! Currently my almost 5 year old is on the bottom and my just tured 3 yo is on the top. The girls and all their cousins definitely climb up and down all day and play up top as well as drape blankets for forts, but no one has ever tried to jump off. Also,we have a pretty strict rule about no jumping on any of the beds in the house, so no one really does that either. About the only time they really stand on the top bunk is to get onto the ladder. Also the slats for the top bunk are very sturdy. Both my husband (6′ 5″) as well as my self (5′ 10″) have slept up there on our own with a daughter from time to time. Honestly, its a very strong bed. It does not feel rickety furniture at all. Hope this helps! Sorry for the late reply!!

The one pictured is twin sized… She calls it toddler because its low to the ground.

I LOVE this idea. I’m actually going to do it very similar except I’ll have the solid side closer to wall so I can hang tension rod up w/ fabric to make the kids a reading get away. :0) I’m really excited and GRATEFUL to have found this idea. My only question is…where did you get those AMAZING pillows???

    [Reply]

    shanna

Ha! Thank you! The pillows were made originally for our first nursery. It’s a Schumacher fabric that I had custom made into pillows. I have used them on a nursery queen bed, then Addie’s first twin bed, then this bunk bed….and now in our new guest room. Very versatile!

It takes a twin mattress. Ikea sells a very low profile, comfortable one for $79! Love it!
